 There are four rivers close to Asheville, North Carolina. The French Broad, Pigeon, Nantahala and Nolichucky rivers are all nearby. All have different features to offer and provide excitement and beautiful views of Western North Carolina.

The French Broad River is the most scenic and free flowing river in Western North Carolina. It is also one of the oldest and most playful rivers in the mountains of North Carolina. It tends to be warmer and less crowded than the Nantahala River. Class II and class III rapids are plentiful with some class IV rapids as well.
Calm float trips are often available on the section of the river that flows through the Biltmore Estate.
 The Pigeon River is dam controlled and trips are timed with the release of water from the dam. This river has easy access from I-40 near the Tennessee line. If your time is limited this is often the shortest trip. The upper Pigeon River has continuous waves and class III and IV rapids through
the scenic gorge in the Cherokee National Forest. The lower part of the river has smaller rapids and areas of flat river for a gentler ride.
The free flowing Nolichucky River flows into one of the deepest gorges in the Eastern United States. This river offers the longest whitewater rafting trips with eight miles of class II and II rapids.
The dam controlled Nantahala River is the most well known whitewater rafting river. There are 20 class II and III rapids and flat water. This river is very scenic and provides an 8 mile ride.
Kayaking and canoeing are also available from some outfitters. Whether you are looking for the ride of a lifetime or a calm relaxing float trip, Asheville has something to offer
